Downgrading is a right you have if you are a user of Windows Vista Business, or Windows Vista Ultimate only. It is stipulated in the End User License Agreement for these two versions of Windows that you can use Windows XP Professional (not Windows XP Home!) if you choose/need to. A few other items are also stipulated:
- You must provide your own copy of Windows XP Professional, but there is no limitation as to whether or not that is the upgrade, full, OEM, or licensing version.
- Your system builder is not required to support your computer any longer.
- You must have your original copy of Vista if you wish to reinstall later
- Installing XP requires you to format your hard drive
But for those who need this capability, it saves money because XP Pro and Vista Business are rougly the same price. When the compatibility problems that necessitated the switch are gone, you can return to Vista for free. Further, you'll know that the system will already properly support Vista.
One thing I recommend: If you do exercise your downgrade rights, have a session with Device Manager and your computer manufacturer's website first to obtain all the drivers you'll need and burn a disc of these before formatting your hard drive.
