Windows 7's "XP Mode"
Overview
What is it?
Let's face it, a lot of programs out there only work well
on Windows XP. It's one of the main things that slowed or even stopped
people from buying Windows Vista. Even when they did, it was often
downgraded to Windows XP. Microsoft heard you, so with every Windows 7
Professional, Ultimate, or Enterprise license, you also get a license to use
Windows XP Mode. Windows XP Mode gives you a virtual (simulated) computer
that runs Windows XP. This way, any programs you have that don't like
Windows 7, can run in Windows XP instead.
What Do I Need to Use XP Mode?
For Windows 7's XP Mode to work you'll need the following:
-
A Computer running Windows 7 Professional,
Ultimate, or Enterprise; either 32 or 64-bit.
-
A processor capable of hardware virtualization, with AMD-V™ or Intel®
VT
turned on in the BIOS.
Update: This is no longer a requirement, but you'll have to download a
patch to Virtual PC.
-
2 Gigabytes of Memory minimum
-
15 Gigabytes of empty hard drive space
-
Microsoft's step-by-step installation
instructions, found
here.
After downloading and installing the pieces according to
Microsoft's instructions, you'll be able to use XP mode until your
applications will work in Windows 7.
